A MAJOR history seminar based around the buildings at St. Mary’s Church, New Ross, will take place in the local library on Tuesday, August 21, at 7 p.m.
The Medieval Church is one of the most significant landmark buildings in the town. It’s also the oldest known religious site in the area. The talk in the library, which will include a tour, will be presented by Jenny Nuttall.
The talk is being organised in conjunction with the theme of this year’s National Heritage Week which will include ‘Built Heritage Day’. The aim of the national initiative will be to highlight Ireland’s varied built heritage landmarks.
Ms. Nuttall, who is a member of New Ross Historical Society, will give a talk and walking tour of St. Mary’s which was founded in 1210. It has been a place of continued worship in New Ross for over 800 years.
Ms. Nuttall will talk about its links with the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 and the founding of New Ross in the early 13th Century by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, and his wife, Isabella – daughter of Strongbow. Isabella was also granddaughter of Dermot McMurrough, the King of Leinster.
The event will begin at the library at 7 p.m. and from there proceed to the church itself. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. For more information or to book place contact the library directly on 051-421877.
