THE MEMBERS of Wexford Co. Council were informed about the imminent re-opening of the National 1798 Rebellion Centre in Enniscorthy at their monthly meeting last week.

The event will take place on May 23 and the organisers are encouraging everyone in the county to go along on the day.

Economic Development Officer with Wexford Co. Council, Padraig O’Gorman, made a presentation on the re-opening to the members.

He highlighted some of major changes that people can expect when making a visit to the centre: He said visitors will hear about famous people associated with the rebellion including General Lake, John Sheehan (Croppy Boy), Anthony Perry and the dreaded ‘Tom the Devil’.

“People will learn in gruesome detail how 20,000 insurgents faced the might of 10,000 well-trained and well-armed Crown Forces,” said Mr. O’Gorman.

With regard to the overall vision of the revamped centre Mr. O’Gorman said: “Our vision is to re-develop our tourist attraction to ensure its fresh, innovative, cutting edge and in a position to attract [more] visitors in an ever-increasing landscape of varied and diverse tourist attractions.”
