People power no to tax
THE CAMPAIGN against the Household Charge stepped up a gear in Wexford last week as hundreds of people made clear their intention to fight against the new tax.
Crowds numbering over 300 people turned up to meetings in White’s Hotel on Thursday and the Scaville Lodge in Duncormick on Saturday night, all armed with the same sentiment: enough is enough.
Members of the Dáil Technical Group, including Wexford TD Mick Wallace, have come together to form a nationwide campaign against the household and water taxes and have been calling meetings since before the New Year.
At the Wexford meeting on Thursday night, Seamus O’Brien and Cllr. Bríd Smyth outlined the importance of building a resistance campaign to the tax from the ground up.
One speaker’s suggestion to block the bridge in Wexford town, as a form of protest, was met by loud cheers.
In Duncormick’s Scaville Lodge, TDs Mick Wallace and Clare Daly addressed the crowd of over 300 people telling them that the new tax was completely unfair and unjust. It was pointed out that so far, only 3% of people had actually registered for the charge.
One local man, Pat Daly suggested boycotting local politicians who were in favour of the new charge.
Commenting on that idea, Deputy Wallace said: “It would be worth contacting your local politicians and seeing if they are still representing your interests or if they only do it once every five years.”
