Frisbees away!
By Mary Frances Ryan
THE IRISH Flying Disc Association (IFDA) will be represented by two Wexford people when it competes in the upcoming European Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Southampton, England.
Sandra Murphy from Davidstown, Enniscorthy, will take pride of place on the women’s team comprising 17 ladies from across the country, while Alan Doyle from Wexford Town, will participate alongside 22 Irishmen in the event to be held in late July.
A newcomer to the international arena, Sandra will be winning her first international cap in Southampton and is excited and honoured to be part of the team.
Alan on the other hand has represented Ireland at a number of international tournaments, including the World Championships in Finland in 2004.
Both Irish teams are currently participating in an intensive training programme, comprising fitness, and skillbased and set-piece training. The teams will also compete in a number of preparation tournaments, primarily in the UK.
Following their success in the World Championships in Finland in 2004, receiving the honour of Spirit Champions, both teams are determined to increase the standing of Irish Ultimate on the international stage.
Ultimate Frisbee is a fast athletic team sport played by thousands of men and women in Ireland on a field similar to a rugby field. A flying disc is thrown between players to score goals in the end zones of the pitch.
