THE QUALIFIERS for John Murphy’s President’s Prize Competition at New Ross Golf Club were held on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th August in reasonable weather conditions.
Unfortunately Sunday’s second round could not proceed due to the extremely inclement weather. The Second Round of the President’s prize for those who made the cut has now been rearranged for Sunday, 19th August. with the President presentation taken place that night. Hopefully the weather will be more favourable on this day.
The Tuesday Fourball Competitions continue and the Tuesday Evenings’ Fourball 31st. July sponsored by Peter Goggin Hardware had a very large entry and the results were as follows. 1st. Jim Byrne and P. Flynn 33 Pts. 2nd. John Murphy and John Dowling

The Tuesday evening fourball on 7th August, was sponsored by Driver Harris the results were as follows: 1st. Martin O’ Brien (9) and Junior Cashin (5) 32 pts. 2nd. James Kent (14) and AJ Mernagh (11) 32 pts. 3rd. Eamonn Murphy (13) and Des Redmond (16) 31 pts. 4th. Anthony Rochford (8) and John Rochford (10) 30 pts.
37 Seniors turned out last Thursday 2nd August in good weather for a change. In first place were the three-ball of Hugh Byrne, Fr. Jim Curtis and Richard Cahill with 95 points. Second place went to Denis Kirwin, Fr. Ger O’ Brien, John Fitzpatrick and Paul Laffin with 91 points. Also on 91 in third position were John Harrington, Jim Ryan, Michael Long and Mick Martin. Mick playing his first Seniors since his accident.
Ladies’ Golf: An 18-hole Stroke (medal) competition sponsored by Michael Ryan Golf Shop was held on Sunday 5th and Wednesday 8th August. The winner was Annette Byrne (34) with a score of 70. In 2nd place was Mary Dowling (2) with 71 (last 9), 3rd was Liz Roberts (20) with 71 and 4th was Ger Mackey (14) with 73 (last 9). Annette was also presented with the Centenary Cup as the winner.
Our next competition will be held on Sunday 12th and Wednesday 15th August. This is an 18-hole stableford competition sponsored by Padraig Bailey Scarke Golf Course. The draw times for Wednesday are 9 to 9.15,
10.15 to 10.30, 2 to 2.15, and 4.15 to
4.30. The last draw is at 5.30.There will be an 18-hole stableford competition sponsored by Steele & Co. on Wednesday 15th August.
The 9-hole (re-entry) competition in aid of National Breast Cancer Research is ongoing until the end of the month.
The Ladies’ Section held a very successful Open Charity Day on Thursday 9th August. This day was once again very generously sponsored by Kalonil Stores. Over •2500 was raised and was presented by the Lady Captain Sue Barrett to the New Ross Day Care Centre.
The winners of this open day were as follows: 18-hole stableford competition for ladies: 1st Teresa Minihan (22) from New Ross with 36 points, 2nd was Sandra Atkinson (4) from Woodbrook with 35 points. 3rd was Bernie Delaney (28) from Enniscorthy with 33 points (last 9) and 4th was Kay Kelleher (26) from New Ross with 33 points.
