Mallow down easy

THE Mallow Home and Garden Show takes place this year over the weekend of Friday 27 June to Sunday 29 June and the threeday event will have all the garden attractions of the past – permanent display gardens, plant specialists, trade stands for pottery, decking specialists, unusual exotics, water plant specialists, plus free demonstrations and presentations (four times daily) from a team of well-known personalities, including a flower arranging expert.

It is expected to attain the kind of notoriety, success and value for money that it achieved over the past nine years.

Open from 11am to 6pm daily, the admission price is still only 10 with free admission for children. Best of all, of course, is the free, spacious parking which is available directly adjacent to the event.

The permanent gardens (this year they total 23) are, I am advised, being revamped and while four will be brand new most of the others will retain their original design features but will boast new, additional plantings. As in the past, there will (hopefully) be flashes of brilliance. The more modest creations will certainly be of the type you would love to take home at the end of your visit.

More will possibly be quirky, outré, expensive, impractical, and impossible to replicate at home!

? Liz Cullinane will be designing and creating a Japanese night-time garden which will give the visitor the chance typical Japanese design features but in the dark! Liz’s background is in theatre so we can expect a bit of magic in this creation

? Anu is a new company launching at this years festival headed up by Paul Quirke and Rita Higgins. Anu will build a garden with a living green roof and an example of a living wall

? A special planting scheme of 30 varieties of hosta and astilbes will be added to the aqueous garden directly behind the Straw Bale house

? Dominic Cullinane will create a contemporary garden called Aubergine which will encompass a special water feature using steel panels specially created by Cork artist Kevin Holland. The remainder of the garden will be paved and decked in a way not seen before by the public

? Marie Collard of Future Forests will be adding new dimensions to the bleached lime garden, the wood garden and the medieval garden

? Chris Heffernan is creating a new garden over the space that was last year’s Mediterranean garden. His work is well respected in design circles.

These will all draw comment and speculation, and that’s what the show is all about! Of course, many will visit for the plant specialists’ offerings and who can blame them when the best of today’s new introductions will be on show and for sale? For a great day out, visit the Mallow Home and Garden Exhibition on 27 to 29 June.
