Egan shows his class in star-studded boxing show
A PACKED Riverbank House Hotel, Wexford venue was treated to a great night of boxing on Saturday, with the light heavyweight bout between Kenny Egan and Niall ‘Basil’ Kennedy topping the bill.
The Olympic Games silver medalist showed his class in a comfortable win over the hard-working Kennedy.
The Gorey fighter took two standing counts in rounds two and three.
However, the nine-times senior champion was, unusually for him, on the canvas in the third round, but it was due to slip, rather than a punch!
Kennedy was the main organiser of the event, together with St. Ibars/St. Josephs official Liam Walsh, and all proceeds went to the charity AWARE.
Another boxer to impress on the star-studded bill was Gorey BC’s Niall Murray.
He took on and beat senior champion Ross Hickey from Grangecon in the 64kg contest and must surely now have a great chance of success in the national senior championships next month.
St. Ibars/St. Josephs’ Jack Creane got the evening off to a cracking start with an all-action win over Gorey’s Paddy Nolan and High Performance head coach Billy Walsh will have been pleased to see his son, Ryan, and nephew, Dean, record good victories.
Among the former boxers in attendance was Enniscorthy’s Jim O‘Sullivan and Sylvie Furlong from New Ross.
Jim holds a record 10 Irish senior boxing titles, which Kenny Egan hopes to match when he takes part in the All-Ireland championships in February.
Together with Billy Walsh, Sylvie Furlong and Eddie Bolger Jim had dominated the senior championships in a golden era for Wexford boxing in the ‘80s.
Also in attendance was IABA President, Dominic O’Rourke and MC for the night was Wexford County Board president Francis Keeling.
