Holy row over crucifixion at local nightclub
By Colette Browne

THE DECISION of a Wexford nightclub to stage a late-night “crucifixion” on Easter Sunday, has been slammed as an “affront to the Catholic religion” by a local councillor. THE DECISION of a Wexford nightclub to stage a late-night “crucifixion” on Easter Sunday, has been slammed as an “affront to the Catholic religion” by a local councillor.

The Music Factory, South Main St., this week announced plans for a “resurrection section” in the late night music venue on Easter Sunday, April 12. “We have a group of dancers dressed as Roman soldiers and they will come through the nightclub with Jesus on a cross. The cross will be erected in the middle of the dance floor with (the actor as) Jesus tied to it and a performance will then take place in time with the music,” explained club owner Peter May.

However, the plans have been denounced as “beyond the bounds of decency” and “an affront to the Catholic religion” by Independent councillor Padge Reck.

“I DON’T claim to have a halo around my head but I am proud to be Catholic and I have no problem defending my religion. This event reflects badly on society, and the town in general, and should be called off.”

Cllr. Reck said the staging of the “musical crucifixion” in the highly-charged atmosphere of a nightclub, with “scantily dressed” and inebriated patrons, was disrespectful in the extreme.

“Young people at the venue will be under the influence before they arrive and I’m sure there will be jeering and booing. It’s most inappropriate. The decent Church going people of Wexford observe Easter Sunday and what it stands for – it’s the most sacred day in the Church’s calendar,” said Cllr. Reck.

The Independent Councillor said management at the club needed to “cop on” and said he did not apportion blame on the young people who would attend the controversial event.

“I’m sure the management will come along with some kind of fancy excuse, and say that my views are outmoded, but they need to cop on to themselves. I am calling on the bishops and priests to come out strongly against this,” continued Cllr. Reck.

A representative from the Presbytery was unavailable for comment yesterday.

The Music Factory’s “resurrection section” is the latest controversial event to be held at Wexford’s newest club.

On Saturday, the club will have a “bondage party” with staff dressed in bondage gear and a “spanking room” available to patrons who are “into that sort of thing”.

Previously, the venue held a “tag and be shagged” event and also boasts a “bedroom suite” for private parties.
