Courtown
We had a vey big turnout for President, Mr.Pat Kenny’s Prize over the weekend in Courtown Golf Club. The qualifiers were played on Friday and again on Saturday morning and between the two days we had three hundred and four players taking to the fairways to play for the large array of prizes on offer.
On Saturday evening then we had a nine hole shotgun start with the top twenty-seven nett and three best gross players qualifing for the playoff. As usual in competitions as popular as this there was very little between the top few players. At start of the playoff popular Wexford Footballer Matty Forde was leading the field by one stroke with a 64 nett but was aware that he would not be eligible to win first prize because of a club rule which states that for a member to win first place in either the Captains or Presidents prize that he must have returned three qualifying cards since the same prize last year.
There was to be further drama to follow later in the evening as scorecards were being returned when Kevin Kelleher who had the winning score on the day was also to fall foul of that same rule. Later on in the evening during the presentations Kevin made a short speech in which he was very gracious to the man who then took first prize, local member David O’ Donnell. So as if that was not enough to keep Kieran Murphy (competitions chairman ) busy we had another bit of drama unfold on the 18th green, Ian McGirr who had started out in second position signed for a five on the last when he had carded a four this put him back in fourth position and allowed Bernard (Bandid) Byrne to claim third.
The presentations were made in the clubhouse later in the evening and a large crowd turned out to wish Pat and his family well on the day In his introduction speech Captain, Jim French, quoted from Shakespeare’s seven ages of man and welcomed Pat with twelve stages of his life. President Pat Kenny in his speech thanked all for their help and support for making his day such a wonderful experience. President and prize winners alike heaped praise on the condition of the course which was a credit to James Timmins and his greenkeeping staff, I would say that in my twenty something years as a member in Courtown I have seldom seen the course in such good condition.
On Sunday we had another very busy day with the timesheet being full from early morning for the Dominic Smith Electrical sponsored Ladies and Gents singles. A total of one hundred and seventy seven players took to the fairways again and the Ladies in particular returned some very good scores.
On Thursday 13th The Tom Funge Memorial Cup takes place. This competition is limited to boys and girls under the age of eighteen and handicap restrictions will apply. The timesheet is reserved from 8.00 a.m to 2.30 p.m. Some spaces may still be available for this open competition, players may book through the office on 053/9425166. The entry fee is €10 and this includes a light lunch.
Next Friday there will be an Ecumenical Service in the Clubhouse at 7.00 p.m, the bar will be closed during this short service. On Saturday the tee will be reserved for two large outings Prospect Park and Tara Cove from 8.00 a.m to 2.00 p.m. Sunday will be a singles sponsored by E B S Colman Doyle.
