Contract signed for 1.5m works at Faythe N.S.
CONTRACTS HAVE been signed to begin a major refurbishment and extension of St. John of God School, The Faythe.
The Department of Education allocated 1.5m for the works which will begin in early March 2010 and continue in to the summer holidays. Classes will continue as normal in the school building.
All major building work will be carried out after school hours. St. John of God sisters have taught on this site since 11th March, 1875.
Most people who have had connections with the Faythe School will know that there was an old school and a new school. The old school was completely knocked down in 1946 and the new school was built. Another wing was added in the 1960s.
DCS Architects, Trinity St., were appointed the job as architects, while the tender for the construction phase was won by Bushnell Construction.
The works include the building being extended to include a kitchen/dining area on the ground floor, a new library will be built on the top floor, a new wheelchair ramp at the front entrance, a fully-fitted P.E. room on the ground floor, a new play equipment in playground, a multi-utility games area in playground, every teaching space will have interactive white boards, there will be new windows for the entire school, as well as a new heating system, the building will be upgraded to fire-safety standards (i.e. fire doors will be fitted throughout the school), security lighting will be installed at the perimeter of the building, CCTV will be installed internally and externally, all entrance and exit doors will be fitted with new security system.
There will also be a new public address system will be installed. Some of the classrooms will be merged and there will be a new lighting system for entire school.
There will be hot and cold running water in every classroom and new flooring throughout the school. The interior will be re-painted while the playground will be completely resurfaced The existing P.E. hall will become library/media room.
Gary Morris of DCS Architects said there were 54 expressions of interest from construction companies for the project. Mr. Morris, (a past pupil), said he was happy the contract went to a local company.
