Derek is aiming for national boxing gold this weekend

ADAM NOLAN lost out to current senior welterweight champion Willie McLoughlin in last weekend’s semifinal at the National Stadium on a 50 scoreline.

Wexford boxer Nolan, now fighting out of Bray BC, tried everything he could to sway the result, but just couldn’t break down the Illies Golden Gloves boxer’s defence.

Wexford’s one remaining hope for a senior title now rests with Derek Thorpe from St. Aidan’s Boxing Club, Ferns.

He takes on world bronze medalist John Joe Nevin in this weekend’s flyweight decider, and will have to be at his best to beat the Cavan BC fighter who is twice senior champion.

Meanwhile, in the Novice Championships, David Waters, St. Michaels, New Ross, had a big 12-1 quarter-final win over Thomas Mulinaskiy, Neilstown BC in his light middleweight contest. But he lost out to Edward O’Connor from Sacred Heart BC, Dublin in the semifinal with the referee stopping the contest in round 1.

Gorey BC’s John Sheil was a somewhat unlucky loser in his cruiserweight contest when going down 10-7 to Kevin Moran from the Colon/Pilstown Boxing Club. Sheil received two public warnings in the last round, which effectively cost him the fight.

Wexford had another winner in the Leinster Championships (Junior 1 and and 2) when David Kenendy, Gorey BC beat Aidan Wall, Navan BC in the 63kg final.

Further honours are hoped for when Wexford boxers compete in the Leinster Boys 1, 2 and 3 Championships in Dundalk this weekend.
