Junkets cost us €80,000
WEXFORD COUNTY council spent tens of thousands of Euro sending local councillors on junkets to some of the world’s most exclusive destinations, according to documents released to the Echo under the Freedom of Information Act.
Between 2004 and 2008, the local authority lavished €80,000 on Wexford’s councillors with cash being splashed on limousine hire, five-star hotels, and gourmet meals.
On one single trip to New York, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, four councillors Fine Gael’s Pat Codd and Kathleen Codd Nolan, Fianna Fáil’s Lorcan Allen and Ind. Cllr Declan MacPartlin checked into Park Avenue hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, for up to a week, with the entire trip costing taxpayers over €13,000.
A year later, the council spent even more sending two councillors Fine Gael’s Denis Kennedy and former Fianna Fáil Cllr. Jimmy Curtis on an extended tour of Australia and Singapore.
Incredibly, one councillor, ‘Junket’ Jimmy Curtis, spent over one-quarter of the council’s entire five-year foreign-travel budget on himself.
