THIS COMING weekend will see Campile village transported back in time to a period when jousts were common place and knights did battle to win the heart of the local Princess.
The village is gearing itself up for its first Medieval Festival which promises to be one of the most unique family events in the county this year. The main demonstrators at the festival will be the Fingal Living History Society. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. On Saturday the demonstrations will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday, from 12 noon to 8 p.m.
Commenting on the event to the New Ross Echo a spokesperson for the organisers said: “Our exquisite re-enactment camps will bring us back in time and show us the many crafts that were used in everyday life in these times such as the blacksmith, the armourer and wood turners.”
“They will also be demonstrating battle skills and re-enacting medieval fighting throughout the weekend,” said the spokesperson.
The village will also come alive with the music and atmosphere of one of the most vibrant but turbulent eras in history. Among the other attractions scheduled to appear will be Strongmen, the Templar Knights, fortune tellers, face painting, and archers.
The entry fee on the day will be €5 for adults while children under 12 will be admitted free-of-charge.
For anyone interested in dressing up for the occasion there will be a medieval fancy dress competition which will be judged by members of Fingal Living History Society.
“Dig out some medieval looking attire and come dressed as a knight, peasant, a wench, king, queen or whatever medieval character you like,” said a spokesperson for the organising committee.
“You could even come dressed like a dragon or a noble steed.”
Food lovers will also be able to avail of a large selection of food stalls during the festival and there will also be various craft products available to view and purchase during the event.
There will be parking available at the event with spaces clearly signposted. All proceeds from the festival will go towards Campile Hall for the ongoing upkeep and refurbishment of the building.
