ST. KEARNS Rowing Club held its annual regatta recently and the event proved to be one of the most exciting sporting competitions of the year to-date.
There were 23 competitive races held throughout the day and most of them took place in glorious sunshine which added to the overall enjoyment on the day.
Highlights for the host club included two victories – in the 3rd Class Ladies and U-18 Girls’ categories. However, the club had a lot to cheer about on the day as its members also recorded 14 second place and five 3rd place finishes.
The organisers were delighted with the turnout on the day. They thanked everyone involved in making the regatta a success and a particular word of thanks was conveyed to the club’s two main sponsors, Irish Pride and Selskar Chemist, Wexford.
“We would like to thank all our other sponsors who kindly donated spot prizes,” said a club spokesperson to the New Ross Echo.
The success of any event like this is very reliant on a hard-working backroom team and the regatta was no exception. The club spokesperson commended the members who helped out with things like ticket sales, providing cakes and buns and those who helped with setting up and cleaning up on the day.
“There were also the people who helped out with the shop and burger stalls, the registration, the safety boats, the stewarding and the coxes,” she said.
“Our little club can do remarkable things once we all row together.”
The event was one of the first initiatives organised under the recently appointed new club Chairperson, Richie Roche.
