THE ROS Tapestry will be leaving New Ross for a few days within the next fortnight when it goes on view at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show in the RDS.

It will be put on display between August 15 and 19. A spokesperson for the Tapestry commented to the New Ross Echo: “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Tapestries and the skills of the 160 plus stitchers from all over Co. Wexford and beyond who created them from commissioned paintings by [Countess] Ann Bernstorff – working under the guiding hand of Alexis Bernstorff.”

The work creating the Tapestries has been slow and painstaking, however, it has resulted in a work of exquisite quality and beauty.

“All the stitching has been done by volunteers and has been going on in people’s homes and other venues for all of this period,” said the spokesperson.

“The result is a work of art, of craftsmanship, of history, and of community, that is quite unique.”

She also revealed that the opportunity to avail of the invite to the Dublin Horse Show was only possible following the encouragement of New Ross Town Council, Wexford Co. Council and in particular New Ross Traders’ Association who “not only offered financial support but are actively assisting with the project”.

“There have also been a number of local companies who have offered financial support with the mammoth task of transporting the Tapestries to Dublin,” said the spokesperson.

The local Tapestry shop will remain open while the panels are in Dublin but obviously viewing of the full exhibition in New Ross will be suspended temporarily until the panels return.

“It is the intention of the Tapestry Board not only to promote the Tapestry itself during the show but to be ambassadors for New Ross and Co. Wexford,” said the spokesperson.

“They will be encouraging everyone they meet to consider New Ross as a place to stay – as it is the hub of a region with many visitor attractions to visit and enjoy,” she added.
