A YOUNG Wexford athlete has created a new Celtic Games record in the Girls’ U-18, 400m hurdles event.

Orla Furney, who is a member of Gorey Athletic Club, created the new record at the Celtic Games in Scotland at the weekend. Ms. Furney was part of the Athletics Ireland team who travelled over for the event to Aberdeen Sports Village.

She smashed the existing record for the event with a time of 65.92 seconds. In addition to her record-breaking performance the Irish team had plenty of reason to celebrate as they came home with the overall team title.

The Celtic Games involves young athletes from the province of Ulster, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

The Irish team put in an outstanding performance on the day despite windy conditions. They recorded an overall points tally of 179 and ran out comfortable winners.

In addition to the overall title the Irish team members also came home with both the girls’ and boys’ overall trophies.
