THE ORGANISERS of last weekend’s Duncannon Sand Sculpting Festival couldn’t have hoped for more ideal weather conditions to hold such an event.

The festival, which kicked off on Friday night with a programme of acts and activities that featured everything from fireworks to up-and-coming Wexford rockers, Kobi, was a resounding success.

The latter mentioned group is fast creating a major buzz on the domestic music scene. With an average age of just 17, but possessed with the ability of a band decades older, Kobi are surely destined for stardom if there is any justice within the world of music.

However, the real fun of the festival was had on the beach where the main focus of attention was firmly fixed.

Fabulous weather conditions prevailed for the majority of the weekend and this ensured high numbers of people witnessed the work on view. The pieces created on the beach formed the centre-piece of the weekend’s activities and in keeping with past events this year’s sculptors were fabulous to view.

Mythical creatures of the sea was a common thread found among the creations and the attention to detail was astounding. The level of work that goes into the sculptures each year truly has to be seen to be believed and many of those present at the weekend were visibly overwhelmed by the high degree of craftsmanship on view.

The organisers ensured that all members of the family were well catered for all weekend. A wide range of activities were in place for children and families got fully engrossed in the sand-sculpting competition held on the beach. Many children also showcased their artistic talent through painting initiatives.

As with all events of this type the festival’s success was reliant on a very hard-working committee and a team of volunteers who helped out throughout the course of the weekend.

The committed acknowledged the role played by everyone who supported the event and they are now looking forward to an even more successful festival in 2013.
