LAST WEEKEND saw a major sporting event take place in Co. Wexford which saw competitors endure a gruelling competition on a par with some of the events taking place in the Olympic Games in London.
The annual ‘Tri the Hook’, triathlon, which took place on Saturday, saw competitors tackle a 750m swim in the sea off Baginbun followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km run.
The event attracted a record number of entries and the organisers were delighted with the fact glorious sunshine prevailed throughout. The weather also made the triathlon all the more enjoyable from a spectator point of view.
As with any major sporting event of this type the entries were not just confined to Co. Wexford with some participants travelling long journeys to get involved.
The first lady home was Amy O’Keeffe who proved herself to be an athlete of note and she was warmly welcomed over the finish line at St. Mary’s Hall in Fethard-on-Sea. The cycle route saw the tri-athletes take in some of the most scenic locations in and around the Hook Peninsula and Fethard-on-Sea areas.
The overall winner was Michael Moloney, from Co. Waterford. The organisers thanked all of the competitors for participating in the event which is proving to be one of the most popular annual sporting events on the local calendar.
