County Wexford is celebrating Paralympic gold after swimmer Darragh McDonald scored a convincing victory in the final of the 400m Freestyle S6 at the Aquatics Centre in London on Saturday.
The 18-year-old Gorey man turned the tables on Sweden’s Anders Olssen, who had beaten Darragh to gold at the Beijing Games in 2008.
But Darragh dominated this final from pillar-to-post, to score victory in a time of 4:55.56 – an improvement on his impressive 5:02.38 in the heats earlier in the day.
Darragh will be aiming to add further Freestyle golds in the 50m and 100m categories.
