Second-half goals from Rory Jacob and Nicky Kirwan ensured Oulart-The Ballagh bagged a fourth successive Pettitt’s county senior hurling championship title with a 2-12 to 0-13 win over a gallant Faythe Harriers outfit at Wexford Park on Sunday.
The ‘Harriers, appearing in their first final since having captured the silverware in 2001, competed gamely amid trying conditions, and a superb long-range point from impressive midfielder Kevin Gore just 14 seconds into the second-half tied the sides on 0-6 apiece. But the challengers were winded seconds later by a goal from Rory Jacob, and Nicky Kirwan tapped home a rebound on 49 minutes after a save by the ‘Harriers’ ‘keeper to make it 2-11 to 0-10 and set Oulart firmly on course for their seventh Wexford title within the space of nine years.
The win also establishes Limerick-man Pat Herbert as the fourth man to manage Oulart-The Ballagh to the Dr. RJ Bowe Cup, following in the footsteps of Tom Neville, Willie Sunderland, and current Wexford boss Liam Dunne.
Oulart now face a Leinster Club quarter-final on November 4th away to Dublin kingpins Kilmacud Crokes, who have prevailed in the Capital for the first time since 1985.
