A THREATENED boycott of the camogie All-Stars by Wexford’s all-conquering players over the inexplicable omission of Mary Leacy from the shortlist for the awards has been averted.
Some members of the Wexford squad were considering refusing to turn up at the awards banquet next month after star defender Leacy was left out of contention despite another distinguished campaign by the ever-present no.6, who has three All-Stars to her credit.
The exclusion of Leacy has certainly stirred strong feelings of resentment in the Wexford camp towards the All-Star selectors, who made another strange decision in shortlisting Kate Kelly on the half-forward line when the St. Ibar’s player spent a considerable chunk of the championship-winning campaign at midfield, including in the final win over Cork.
But after considering wiser counsel the Wexford contingent have decided to attend the awards on November 3rd, when 12 of the team will be in the running for the gongs, including first-time nominees Deirdre Codd and Fiona Rochford. The list is completed by goalie Mags D’Arcy; the full-back line of Claire O’Connor, Catherine O’Loughlin and captain Karen Atkinson; wing-back Noeleen Lambert; half-forwards Josie Dwyer and Michelle O’Leary; and, full-forwards Katrina Parrock and Ursula Jacob.
