OUTGOING SELECTOR Willie Cleary was one of the candidates interviewed last week for the vacant Wexford minor hurling manager’s position.
Clonard-man Cleary, who did great work with Rathnure in recent years, including guiding them to last year’s county senior final, detailed his ambitions for the county minors to a recruitment committee headed by the Chairman of Coiste na nÓg-Loch Garman, Des O’Neill (Ferns St. Aidan’s), and also comprising underage Secretary, Marion Doyle (Taghmon-Camross), Coaching Officer, Andrew Egan (Davidstown-Courtnacuddy), together with Ger Flood (Cloughbawn), Eamonn Mernagh (Oylegate-Glenbrien) and John O’Connor (St. Martin’s).
Liam Griffin, who assisted outgoing manager Martin Storey for the past two seasons, did not seek an interview, but it is likely that he will come on board if Cleary gains promotion to the hot-seat.
Others who stated their case to the committee were Paudge ‘Skinner’ Walsh (Rapparees-Starlights) and Eddie ‘Heffo’ Walsh (Faythe Harriers), both of whom have worked tirelessly with county underage squads over the years.
In addition, 2004 Leinster senior hurling championship-winner Paul Carley, who has been a key member of the county under-16 hurling management for the last two years, also met with the committee, as did his Glynn-Barntown club-mate Michael Laffan jnr., who managed Oylegate-Glenbrien last year, when they were extremely unfortunate not to post some noteworthy championship wins.
