NEW ROSS Town Council has been asked to consider reviewing its existing bye-laws with regard to drinking in public places.

Town Clerk, Ger Mackey, made the suggestion during a recent local authority meeting in the Brandon House Hotel.

Speaking to councillors Mr. Mackey said: “There is a need for a review in light of the enhanced town park facilities and quayside plan.”

“These particular bye-laws are useful in combating anti-social behaviour and allows for the full enjoyment of the town’s amenities,” added Mr. Mackey.

He went on to comment on the town park which is now one of the finest facilities of its type in the south east.

Cllr. Annette Larkin agreed with Mr. Mackey’s suggestion and asked if the matter could be placed on the agenda for the next Joint Policing Committee meeting.

“It could be but it is a matter for the local authority,” replied Mr. Mackey.

“We will be required to consult with the Superintendent,” he added.

Mr. Mackey went on to comment: “There has been an increase in this type of behaviour.”

He also added that another area of the town also seemed popular for such activity: “Outside the Tholsel seems to be a great spot for some people lately.”
