HISTORY WAS made in Co. Wexford recently when the county’s first ever inter-club Caman Abu matches took place.
The games were held in the indoor complex at Rathnure-St. Anne’s G.A.A. grounds when the club hosted a visiting squad from the Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s G.A.A Club in New Ross.
The games proved to be very competitive affairs with the Rathnure team, ultimately, proving too strong for the visitors.
Caman Abu started in New Ross around two months ago with the players getting together two nights-a-week, on Monday and Thursday nights, for practice games on the astro-turf pitches at the Good Counsel College. The games popularity is on the rise with an increasing level of interest being expressed locally.
Rathnure club members have been playing the game, which is essentially adult ground hurling, for around a year. That extra experience proved worthwhile during the recent friendly, yet historic, fixture against New Ross.
It’s hoped that more clubs across the county will become involved in the sport over the coming months. Anyone interested in finding out more about Caman Abu in New Ross or Rathnure can contact either club or go along to one of the training sessions.
