A YOUNG secondary school student from Bannow is using his newly acquired culinary skills to raise awareness for a centre specialising in suicide prevention.

Lar Whelan is a 5th year student in the Good Counsel College. As part of his Transition Year programme he spent time working in the kitchens of renowned Wexford chefs, Phelim Byrne, and Kevin Dundon.

However, what began as work experience developed into a passion and now Lar is using his inherent talent to raise money for Pieta House which is the Centre for the Prevention of Suicide and Self-Harm.

For his awareness campaign Lar baked and decorated a Christmas cake which will be raffled off in his school in the lead up to the festive holidays. All money raised from the initiative will go towards Pieta House.

Commenting on the idea to The Echo, the 16 year-old said: “With all the excitement of Christmas it is easy to forget that it can actually be a very difficult and lonely time for some people so I just thought it would be nice to raise some money for a very good cause.”
