NEW ROSS haulage firm Nolan Transport has entered a plea of guilty for its part in the death of two women near Thomastown in Co Kilkenny.

Director for the company, Patricia Nolan, pleaded guilty at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court on Tuesday regarding an incident which took place five years ago.

On July 19 2007, a load of heavy steel coils on a lorry shifted, which lead to an accident involving the death of Vanessa McGarry and Mary Lonergan.

The incident also caused personal injuries to James Furlong, Louise Lonergan and Gerard Corcoran.

Defence Counsel John O’Kelly, SC, said that Ms. Nolan was in court to enter a plea in the case on behalf of the company.

She pleaded guilty to the company failing to manage the load carried by an articulated lorry, causing death.

The offence was contrary to Section 12 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

On the application of counsel, it was agreed that the matter be adjourned to January 15, for mention, with a view to setting a date for hearing.
