AN IMAGE of a horse being power-washed at a Bunclody garage which has garnered much attention on the Internet has been heavily criticised by South East Animal Rescue.

The picture, which shows a horse being washed by a group of men using a device designed for cleaning vehicles, was posted on Facebook by a local man, which was then picked up by site Joe.ie.

It was then shared on their Facebook page with the caption ‘Only and we mean only in Ireland’, and garnered over 2,500 ‘likes’.

Comments such as ‘F*** your Honda civic, I wash my horse outside’ were posted by the social networking site users, but secretary of South East Animal Rescue, Jean Stretch, said the issue was not a laughing matter.

“It’s an absolute disgrace – why was it allowed? Why was it allowed to happen? Surely the garage was aware it was going on. To people who find it funny, I’d like to ask them have they felt the strength of a power wash before. It would be extremely painful.

“When I was shown the photo I couldn’t understand how the horse was standing still as you can only imagine the pain.”

When contacted by The Echo, Texaco Garage said that similar incidents had occurred recently but they were helpless in doing anything.

“We are not allowing it to happen,” a spokesperson said. “People put money into the power-washer and use it without our supervision. We have nothing to do with it and condemn it being used this way.”
