A PLAY by Enniscorthy author Colm Tóibín, based on his 2012 novella about the life of Mary in the aftermath of the Crucifixion, is set to debut on Broadway this Spring.

Harry Potter actress Fiona Shaw will star in ‘The Testament of Mary’, with previews beginning March 26 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The opening night  show is set for April 22, when it will run for 12 weeks.

The show will be produced by Scott Rudin, who in 2012 won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award, being the first producer to do so.

Previous work of his includes films The Social Network, The Queen, No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood, as well as Broadway plays Fences, The Book of Mormon and Passion, among others.

Deborah Warner, a British director of theatre and opera will be directing Mr. Tóibín’s play. Ms. Warner is best known for her interpretations of the works of Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Georg Büchner, and Henrik Ibsen, and for her long-term working relationship with the Irish actress Ms. Shaw.

Mr. Tóibín first penned ‘Testament’ as a monologue performed by Marie Mullen at the 2011 Dublin Theatre Festival and it was then released as a highly-acclaimed novella last November.

Ms. Shaw will play Mary, the mother of Jesus, who tells her own story in the aftermath of her son’s crucifixion.
