ENNISCORTHY is coming to terms with the news of the sudden death of a second member of one of the town’s best known families.

Brendan Tobin, brother of the award-winning author Colm Tóibín, was found dead at his home on Parnell Avenue at around 6 p.m. on Sunday evening. He was discovered by a passing neighbour who then phoned the Gardai for assistance.

Gardai and an ambulance attended the scene, which was then preserved until after the post-mortem which was carried out on Monday afternoon in Waterford Regional Hospital.

Garda Superintendent in Enniscorthy, William Carolan confirmed to The Echo yesterday that on conclusion of the post-mortem, the assistant State Pathologist Dr. Khalid Jabbar was satisfied that the cause of death had been through an accidental injury. He added that the house, which had been preserved by Gardai, had been handed back to the family.

Mr. Tobin, who was in his 60s, was a well-known figure in the town. He was the eldest son of the late Micheál and Breda and was pre-deceased by another brother Niall, who had passed away in Africa. He is survived by his sisters Nuala Stack and Bairbre, and brother Colm.

His funeral mass takes place at noon on Thursday at St. Aidan’s Cathedral, with burial after in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
