CBS PRIMARY School, The Mercy School and St. John of God Primary School are all to become co-educational from Junior Infants up, from September 2014.

The massive transformation in education in Wexford was announced via a statement from Bishop Denis Brennan this week.

The change will mean pupils will no longer have to go to a ‘feeder’ school for the first years of their primary education, but instead will go directly to a co-educational school.

In what has been seen as a move into modernity, it is understood all three schools have the capacity to take the influx of younger students come 2014.

The move is dependent upon approval from the Minister for Education, but considering this change to primary school structures has been mooted for some years now, the plan is expected to be given the green light.

The old primary school model was based on convent school education, whereby boys were transferred from a convent school at the end of first class to a different all boys primary school.

The Echo understands that all teachers, parents and the management of the three schools have been informed of the changes.

There are currently around 850 pupils in the three schools, but this number will swell to well over 1,100 if the new system is introduced in September 2014.
