The recently closed premises of Wexford Farmers Co-Op, Gorey. Christy Farrell

While North Wexford is reeling at the news that about ten jobs have been lost by the closure of the WFC premises at Gorey, and at Monamolin, there is some compensation for the district as the long established Gardiner Grain Ltd from Coolgreany are opening the ex-WFC premises at Mill Road this morning.

A spokesperson for Gardiner Grain confirmed the extension to their business interests and a number of extra staff will be recruited through an advertisement in today’s newspaper.

The positions sought include a branch manager, assistant manager, a sales representative and a yard foreman.

The immediate plan is get the business up and running, dealing in fertilisers and hardware – similar to the company’s other businesses at Coolgreany, Carnew and Avoca – and was described by a spokesperson as “a work in progress.”

The new occupiers will include continuity of agri-trading activity in North Wexford, including the provision of a grain-intake depot during the harvest.

Meanwhile, WFC ceased agri-trading at six of its branches countywide, including the premises at Mill Road, Gorey, and at Monamolin, in a shock move at the end of business last Tuesday.

A notice appeared on the entrance gates which confirmed that “this branch is closed as and from the 12th February 2013,” followed by “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
