A dramatic goal from Graeme Cullen in the dying seconds of extra-time snatched a sensational 2-10 to 0-15 quarter-final win for Wexford away to Westmeath on Wednesday night in the Leinster under-21 football championship at Mullingar.

A 16th-minute goal from Glynn-Barntown’s Robert Dempsey gave Wexford the edge at half-time (1-4 to 0-5), before three late points from Westmeath senior star John Heslin forced extra-time on 1-8 to 0-11.

Westmeath were reduced to 14 men six minutes into the additional 20 minutes, but they seemed home-and-hosed when leading 0-15 to 1-10 with time fast running out – until Wexford’s tenacity saw Cullen scramble an exhilarating last-gasp winning goal.

Wexford now face Longford, who shocked defending All-Ireland champions Dublin by 1-7 to 1-6 at Parnell Park.
