Following a meeting organised by Senator D’Arcy with Assistant Garda Commissioner, Jack Nolan, and Chief Superintendent of the Wexford Division, John Roche, last Tuesday, and attended by representatives of the Save Gorey Garda District campaign, it was confirmed that the removal of senior Gardaí from Gorey Garda Station would now not occur until the autumn.
Chief Supt. Roche, while addressing the Joint Policing Committee, stated that June 23rd was the date the Gardaí were working towards, but that is no longer be the case.
“I am pleased with this deferral, as it gives us the time to continue the process of a review for the reorganisation of policing in North Wexford,” said Sen. D’Arcy, who added, “The analysis of how the Gardaí arrived at this decision has yet to be satisfactorily explained.
This extended time schedule should facilitate the continuation of the campaign to save the Gorey Garda district and the Save Gorey Garda District committee say they have no intention of “taking their foot off the pedal.”
Sen. D’Arcy agreed; “Although we have won this initial battle, the fight goes on to save policing in our area.”
Sen. D’Arcy confirmed that the next stage involves his request for all documentation from the Commissioner relating to how the initial decision was arrived at.
While An Garda Siochána is currently not compelled to provide this information under the present Freedom of Information regime, Sen. D’Arcy believes that situation will change when the General Scheme of the Freedom of Information Bill 2012 is passed.
This is the next stage to ensure policing in North Wexford does not fall below the same standard as the rest of County Wexford.
