The long running saga concerning the future of The Showgrounds and what development is likely to take place there is expected to be decided at the next meeting of Gorey Town Council.
Town Clerk, Amanda Byrne, gave a short presentation on the plans that were costing in the region of €4m, and the meeting felt it was unfeasible in the present economic climate.
Following public consultation and in co-operation with local sporting interests Wexford County Council prepared a series of plans for Gorey Showgrounds in 2012.
These plans were submitted to the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport Capital Grants Scheme in 2012 with estimated capital costs in the region of €4 million.
The scope of the 2012 Sports Capital Scheme did not cover the level of investment required.
However the project remains an important one for the town of Gorey and surrounds.
It is the view of the Council that the best way forward is to consider how the project might be phased and how such phases may be prioritised.
This process is ongoing and as on previous the views of local people and groups are invited.
It is felt that the most urgent need was an indoor sports hall which will cost in the region of €1 million, including ancillary works and services.
This is likely to be the choice as phase one of the development.
There is also a suggestion for a running track, but the cost is €440,000, including essential drainage works.
Town Manager, Eddie Taaffe has asked Council members to think about the facilities they want prioritised before the next meeting and the Council will explore funding.
