AH2441A

A WEXFORD man is recovering after he was the victim of a savage attack which left him in hospital with serious injuries, including a vicious bite on his lower lip.
The man, who does not wish to be named, was attacked on Selskar Street in town in the early hours of Sunday morning while walking in a busy area with a friend.
The man told The Echo that he remembered very little of the incident as he had passed out after the first blows landed.
“I was with a friend when this man just came up and head-butted me. I have epilepsy so when that happened I had a panic attack and fell on the ground. I don’t remember much because of that but I was told that I got kicks to the head and temple.”
Most horrifically, the man suffered a severe injury to his lip after it was bitten while he was knocked out: “Only an animal would do something like that. I was just minding my own business and the next thing I was jumped on.”
The man said that there was a large crowd of people in the area at the time but no-one stepped in to help: “They just watched. I got no help from anyone until someone brought me to the hospital where I was kept in until Monday morning.”
The man had to have stitches on a cut above his nose, which was broken, while his lip had to be pieced back together and received ten stitches. The lip injury may require a skin graft in the coming weeks: “I also got kicks to the temple, stiffened shoulder and back and I think a bone in my ear could be broken as I can’t put any pressure on it.”
Chief Supt. Roche said: “We would welcome assistance from the public on this and we understand that there may have been a number of witnesses as it happened in a busy part of the street shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the morning.”
Gardai are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault who may have information to contact them at 053 91 65200.
