GARDAÍ ARE searching for a hit and run driver who knocked down two young women in the centre of Enniscorthy.
The women, both in their early twenties, were crossing Abbey Quay near the old bridge in the early hours of the morning when they were struck by a speeding car.
The impact hurtled the women into the air but the driver of the silver car, which came from the direction of Seamus Rafter bridge, failed to stop.
An ambulance and the Gardaí were summoned to the scene, resulting in one of the victims being temporarily hospitalised.
What started out as a social night recently almost ended tragically after the women left Benedict’s Nightclub at 2.50 a.m.
While crossing half-way across the road to the AIB building, they noticed a car travelling at speed towards them.
The vehicle slammed into both of them, but seriously injured one. She was removed to Wexford General Hospital where 16 stitches were inserted into a head wound.
She also suffered shock, injuries to her ribs and considerable damage to her teeth. It is believed Gardaí are examining C.C.T.V footage of the area but have appealed for witnesses who may have been out on Bank Holiday Sunday to come forward.
