THE HOOK Peninsula provided the perfect setting last weekend for one of the ‘paint-out’ locations during this year’s Art in the Open (Plein Art) festival.

One of seven different locations chosen for this year’s event the Hook was idyllic in terms of its natural inspiration for the artists involved.

From rocky seascapes to depictions of the lighthouse tower the artists chose various different scenes to paint.

For the participants involvement in Art in the Open can be lucrative as there are always major cash awards up for grabs. As part of this year’s initiative blank canvases were validated every day and only paintings created on such validated sheets – or paintings made on any evening of the festival in Wexford town – were eligible to submit for inclusion in the overall exhibition of festival work which was put on display at Greenacres in Wexford town.

The Hook event attracted a large crowd of interested spectators who marvelled at the seeing first-hand the remarkable creative process of the talented artists involved.

This year’s festival attracted some of the best known painters from several different countries who performed workshops and gave tips and hints ‘on-site’ as the set about creating their various pieces on location.

Some of the workshops gave aspiring artists the opportunity to receive one-to-one tuition and advice.

Now in its 6th year Art in the Open is now firmly established as one of Europe’s largest annual Plein Air events. It began on July 29 and ran until August 6.
