MEMBERS OF Wexford Co. Council have agreed that the right to water and sanitation should be reflected as a central pillar in national water policy.

Such agreement was the main thrust of a motion brought to the members’ attention by Cllr. George Lawlor.

The Labour Councillor asked that the local authority endorsed the right to water and sanitation as a ‘fundamental core value within Irish society’.

Cllr. Lawlor asked his fellow councillors to agree that: “As citizens of the EU ‘we’ believe in the right of all inhabitants to enjoy this right and that we oppose an attempt to include water in legislation aimed at marker liberalisation.”

He also asked that the local authority support the call for full national, political commitment to ensure that water and sanitation are publicly owned, democratically run and that all in the sector are fully accountable.

The motion was passed when put to a vote.
