Wexford County Councils’ Joint Waste Management Plan, which aimed to have modern recycling centres in the four main towns of Co. Wexford, has reached its target with the official opening of Gorey Household Recycling Centre at Gorey Business Park, Ramstown.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of Wexford County Council, Cllr. Ted Howlin, said the Gorey recycling centre is a fantastic facility for the people of Gorey and North Wexford. “It will make recycling more accessible and convenient for the residents of Gorey and the surrounding environs.”
Cllr. Howlin said the facility cost in the region of €1.3 million to build – capital funding of 75% was the total provided by the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the remaining 25% was funded by Wexford County Council.
Cllr. Robbie Ireton, local representative on Gorey Town Council and Wexford County Council, said the facility was “long overdue,” but he thanked all of the people in the Council who helped bring the project to fruition. “Wexford County Council have been very supportive,” he said.
It is expected that around 800 tonnes of material will be recycled through the centre in the first year of operation. It will be staffed and supervised by Wexford County Council.
The facility is on a site of just under an acre and consists of a control station, offices, staff canteen, toilets, and receptacles for a wide range of recyclable material, ample parking, goods shed, secure fencing and CCTV surveillance.
The new centre offers a wide range of recycling facilities. Cardboard, newspapers, magazines, drink cartons, plastic bottles, glass bottles, drink and food cans, batteries, fluorescent tubes, mobile phones, clothes, books and more are accepted for recycling free of charge.
Large items such as cookers, fridges, computers and scrap metals are also accepted free of charge.
Gorey Recycling Centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8.15 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 4 pm, and on Saturday from 8.15 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 3 pm.
