A large crowd turned up in Askamore Community Centre last Tuesday night where the D2 GridLink Alliance held a public meeting to discuss and exchange information about the planned electricity transmission corridor for Co. Wexford.

A spokesperson for the group said “nothing spectacular” happened at the meeting where the purpose was to get people focussed and the desire to inform people.

A massive letter writing campaign is being urged targeting EirGrid, Dáil deputies and public representatives.

“We also need to strengthen our hand by getting in touch with other corridors around the country.”

Three councillors from Wicklow were in attendance, but none from Wexford, which many in attendance found disappointing.

It is understood that EirGrid had “a positive” meeting with the members of Wexford County Council and appeared to be “relaxed about the project and endorsing Eirgrid.”

Public meetings have already been held at Rathnure, Tombrack, Ballyroebuck and Shillelagh.

“This matter has taken the locals by surprise. It was only a few weeks ago at a meeting held in Bunclody that most people became aware of the project and how it will impact on their environment,” said a spokesperson.

It is very early days in the campaign and inhabitants who may be close to the corridor will be keeping a close watch as the scheme progresses over the next few years.

EirGrid held a consultation day in Bunclody and about 250 people turned up.

The areas impacted are Ballywilliam, Ballygalvert, Coolnahorna, Rathnure, Glenglass, Greenan, Ballynaminnan, Monbeg, Clonjordan, BallywilliamRoe, Ballycarney, Tombrack, Ballaman, Ballyroebuck, Bolinrush, Donishall, Tombreane, Umrigar, Carnew, Ballyknocker, Ballard, Croneyhorn, Boley, Coolkenno, Lumcloon, Corragh, Ballyduff, Duffery, Coolmanagh, Barnhill, Knocklishen, Mountkelly, Mountneill, and Baltinglass.
