Having reported a very successful tourism season in North Wexford this year, the future for next year is extremely bright with the announcement that over 25,000 visitors are expected in Gorey for the Golden Shears World Championships which takes place from May 17th to 25th 2014.
Known as “The Olympics of Sheep Shearing,” top names from over 30 countries, including the United States, Australia, Germany and the UK, are expected to compete on a 25 acre site on the outskirts of the town, adjacent to the Amber Springs Hotel, on the Gorey-Ballycanew Road.
“This is a really big event and will bring huge numbers from overseas,” said local sheep-shearing champion and demonstrator of at local shows and festivals, George Graham, who added; “Gorey’s economy is going to benefit greatly out of this.”
As well as the competition, the site will be transformed into a thriving village with a family orientated festival of food, crafts, fashion and entertainment, and trade stands.
The Golden Shears has the potential to be the biggest event in the south-east next year.
