ENNISCORTHY GARDA Station will have to wait to see if it will benefit from a recent Budget announcement that €9 million will be made available to improve Garda fleets across the country.
Supt. William Carolan told The Echo that the Enniscorthy district had recently received two new patrol cars in the town and in Blackwater and currently had three other cars with relatively high mileage on them.
“We have no idea if we will benefit as of yet. Each district makes a business case for cars and there’s a huge clamour for them around the country at the moment.”
Garda patrol cars had a mileage cut-off of 300,000 after which they would not be guaranteed by their manufacturers and would have to be replaced.
“After 300,000 miles the cars have to be withdrawn from service so when the vehicles are approaching that, we make a case for new cars. We have five cars at the moment, two are new and the other three have a good bit of mileage on them. We’ll wait and see when the allocation is drawn up.”
Supt. Carolan also confirmed that as and from November 10, he would be taking charge of both Enniscorthy and Gorey district as Superintendent of a new North Wexford division.
