AN OULART family had their “faith in humanity restored” following the public reaction to their appeal to return their little girl’s wheelchair, which was stolen along with their new car.
The Echo reported last week how Lauryn Tracey (5), who has cerebral palsy, was forced to travel to school in a buggy after her chair, which cost over €3,000, was taken in the vehicle.
A specially modified car seat was also stolen along with the Tracey family’s silver 132 Hyundai i40, which they only bought recently and tailored to suit Lauryn’s needs.
The robbery occurred when the family was sleeping soundly in their beds. The thieves broke into the house at around 2.30 a.m and stole the keys before taking off in the car.
The story has since caused outrage, not just in CountyWexford but also across the country and Lauryn’s father, Enniscorthy-based Garda Gavin Tracey, said he is overwhelmed at the public reaction.
“I think Lauryn just has a capability of warming peoples’ hearts,” he said.
“I never expected there would be such a big reaction, but she is a very special girl and I appreciate everyone’s help and assistance.”
The little girl received a new wheelchair over the weekend, after Fred Storey – a medical, mobility and rehabilitation supplies company – provided her with a loan.
The chair, adorned with pictures of Minnie Mouse, was delivered from Belfast after the business learned of Lauryn’s plight.
Additionally, people throughout the country have contacted the family to pledge donations and show their support. One man even offered to provide €1,000 as a reward if the wheelchair was returned.
Celebrities such as Bressie have helped out in the campaign to find the chair, with the popular musician retweeting Mr. Tracey’s appeal to his 140,000+ fans on Twitter.
Comedian Katherine Lynch also tweeted her support by posting: “Ah, that’s so cute, she looks delighted, Minnie Mouse wheels are fab” when the latest picture of Lauryn in her new chair was uploaded.
