ENNSICORTHY TOWN Councillors gathered recently to sign the contract for the new Cherryorchard Athletics Track that will begin construction shortly, with Easter 2014 the proposed opening date.

The opening will happen just before the abolition of the Town Councils and as such, this will be the council’s swansong project, something that the nine members are very proud of.

The project is expected to cost in the region of €350,000 to €400,000 and will be up to the required standard for County, Leinster and All Ireland competitions. The project has been supported by Enniscorthy Athletics Club and the Rugby Club which will neighbour the new facility.

The track will have a high-performance surface and will be floodlit. A soccer pitch will be incorporated into the middle of the track which will serve underage clubs in the town.

Town Chairman Cllr. Johnny Mythen said: “This is a very good day for Enniscorthy. It is the start of a new zeitgeist for all our future young athletes and sporting clubs in the Town and County. We as a Town Council and our town officials are looking forward to the completion of the Enniscorthy sports hub.

“We hope it will become a treasured legacy of Enniscorthy and this Council. We are confident it will stimulate and inspire young sports people to become Co. champions, Leinster champions, All Ireland champions and who knows, maybe one day, Olympic Champions.”

Cllr. Keith Doyle also commented: “It will be of huge benefit to clubs and groups in the town. We are seeing it as our goodbye and thank you to the people of Enniscorthy. We are happy to finish off on a note like this. It will be our flagship farewell project.”
