Courtown Post Office where an armed robbery took place this morning.

There was drama at Courtown Post Office this morning when startled staff were subjected to a frightening ordeal when three armed men entered the premises and demanded access to the safe.

The drama began shortly after 9 am when three men threatened and traumatised the staff, one armed with a hand gun, another wielding a knife, and the third man carried a con saw, a heavy duty cutting tool, obviously meant to force open the safe.

They tried to access the safe, which was in a locked office, and when this tactic failed the men demanded money.

An unspecified amount of cash was handed over and the men fled the premises.

They made their escape in a stolen car that was later discovered abandoned at Sandy Lane, a short distance from where the incident occurred, about an hour later.

The vehicle, a ’96 WX registered green coloured Mazda 323, was stolen in Arklow overnight.

Fortunately nobody was physically injured in the cowardly attack on the defenceless workers, but they were badly shaken by the incident.

The premises was closed for a number of hours while a forensic examination was carried out at the scene.

Gardaí at Gorey Garda Station are continuing their investigation into the robbery and are asking about who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the Courtown area on Monday from 9 am to 10 am to contact them on 053 9430690 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
