“Garda authorities and the Minister for Justice have abandoned North Wexford,” that is the view of Cllr. Malcolm Byrne who claims that there were another series of burglaries in the Riverchapel area over the weekend and a serious robbery at Courtown Post Office on Monday morning.

“Burglary in North Wexford continues to be on the increase,” added Cllr. Byrne.

He also slammed the decision of Garda Management and the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, to proceed with the downgrading of Gorey Garda Station from next Monday, November 11th) and warned that it will lead to crime going undetected in the North Wexford area.

The Superintendent for the Gorey and Enniscorthy areas, William Carolan, has stated in a letter to local councillors that “there will be no change to the service provided to front line policing.”

Cllr. Byrne wants to know “How can the Superintendent make such a statement?

“We lose the most senior Garda in the Gorey area as well as support staff on top of the loss of seven Gardai in recent years in Gorey.

“Is he even aware of the scale of some of the problems that are faced in North Wexford?”

Cllr. Byrne is seeking an urgent meeting of the Gorey Joint Policing Committee between Councillors and the Gardai at a convenient date to outline to the people “how Gorey will be served in the future.”
