20140102 - NWSPCA - Kilnahue Site Greyhound Head

Greyhound injured and left to die on a disused site on the outskirts of Gorey.

Animal cruelty has reached a new low following the discovery of a distressed greyhound on a disused site at Killahue on the Carnew Road, just outside of Gorey.

The Inspector for the North Wexford Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (NWSPCA), made a dreadful discovery when responding to a call that an abandoned dog was in distress.

A spokesperson for the NWSPCA said: “The greyhound was huddled in a spot, inaccessible from the remainder of the site – it was hard to see how the dog could have got there without have been thrown over the surrounding fence.”

With Garda Síochána assistance, the animal welfare group accessed the site and recovered the dog.

The dog was in an emaciated state with a wound to the site of its face, a closer inspection show minor wounds underneath – a vet was called to the scene, but the dog could not be saved.

The body of the animal was removed to the NWSPCA centre where it was scanned and found to have no identification markings – tattoos or microchips.

The Society are appealing for any information relating to the case that could help find the owner of the dog.

The Society felt the state in which the dog was found needed to be highlighted and published the case and photos on their Facebook social media site – the story went viral gaining over 60,000 views in the first two days and offers of financial support came in from as far away as South Africa.

Hundreds of people have expressed their disgust at the incident.
