AN ESTATE in Enniscorthy is acting as a dumping ground for filthy mattresses, kitchen appliances, Christmas trees and soiled nappies, it has been revealed.

The appalling condition of Marconi Park, Cherryorchard was brought to the attention of The Echo by a near-by resident of Gort na Silíní.

Frances Cowen, Chairperson of the Resident’s Association for her estate, said to walk to her home means passing through the shocking rubbish situation, which has escalated in the past year.

Ms. Cowen explains that there has always been an issue with dumping in the area over the six years that she has lived nearby, but after No. 7 Marconi Park became unoccupied in December 2012 the problem worsened.

The empty house has since been used as a ‘landfill’, with every household trash imaginable scattered inside and across the garden.

A vacant plot in the housing estate is also being used as a refuse heap.

Ms. Cowen says that the dumped litter, which also includes food, cans, tyres and stained duvet covers, attracts rats, crows and dogs to roam the area, and creates a “horrendous smell” in the summer months.

“It’s just so unhygienic,” she commented. “It’s a disgrace that the people behind this are just getting away with it. It’s just dirty and there’s no reason for it… it seems that the perpetrators’ mindset is: ‘I can, so I will.’ Something must be done about it.”
