A 20-YEAR-OLD local man recently celebrated after he was the only Wexford man to be commissioned in the Irish Army at The Curragh.

Killian Doyle from The Moyne joined the army after leaving school and was stationed in the Curragh where he underwent a gruelling 15-month training regime. On Thursday he, watched by proud family and friends, was commissioned as an officer, holding the title of Second Lieutenant.

He will now spend a year working in Rathmines before taking up a place in a college course in 2015, his first choice being Computer Science and I.T. in Galway.

Killian, a former Enniscorthy CBS student, explained the extent of the training he undertook: “The training is quite intense. It’s 15 months, there’s a lot of physical training and academic work. You could be studying anything from Irish history to politics.

Going into the army was something Killian said he had wanted to do since he was 13: “It was something a bit different and I was drawn to it. No two days are the same and the prospect of overseas service really appealed to me.”

At the ceremony on Thursday, Killian was the only Wexford man in a group of 21 Irish and two Maltese soldiers who were commissioned and he was watched by his proud parents Liam and Ann and brother Padraig.
