With Casement Park closed for a major rebuild this year, the Wexford senior hurlers’ opening National League game against Antrim, on February 16th, will take place at the Ballycastle GAA grounds, County Antrim.

The alternative venue means that hurling fans will be closer than ever to the coastline beauty which Antrim boasts. Ballycastle is located right on the Antrim coast, and a number of local hostelries have put together special offers for that weekend, offering Wexford’s hurling fans the opportunity to make a weekend of it – while still making it to the game on time!

A quiet, peaceful and friendly town, Ballycastle is surrounded by some of Ireland’s most well-known tourist attractions. With the Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge on one side and scenic glens on the other, what more could anyone ask for? Or for the more discerning tourist, there’s the Bushmills Distillery within driving distance too!

One such hotel, which has put together excellent weekend packages for eager Wexford fans, is The Marine Hotel, which  occupies a prime position overlooking the harbour and marina in Ballycastle, and which is the perfect setting for a family trip or for as a base for a solo explorer.

Located just five minutes from Ballycastle GAA grounds, The Marine Hotel has put together some fantastic Bed & Breakfast packages for that weekend, with one night from £49stg per person sharing; two nights for £99stg per person sharing; and, for those making a long weekend of it, you can book a third night for just £30stg.  You can add in evening meals then for a small extra cost.

An alternative option is to call in for their great 5-course Carvery. It costs just £16.95stg per person, and kids under five eat free! The Carvery is served on Sunday (12-4p.m.) and, as the hotel is so close to the GAA grounds, you’ll still make throw-in!

As an extra special gift to coincide with the match, they are offering all Wexford fans free tickets to the Bushmills Distillery tour, as part of your stay!

If you find yourself with more leisure time then, the hotel is also located just five minutes from Ballycastle Golf Club, and there are many other golf courses within a 20 minute drive of the hotel.

So what are you waiting for! Take a few days. Book some great value accommodation. Indulge in some great food at a great price. Take in some of the local attractions. Get a feel for the real Antrim. And make it down to Ballycastle GAA grounds in time for throw-in!
